With the intention of enhancing year-round attractions of a Japanese resort heretofore famous for winter sports, as well as providing after-ski enjoyment, a water sports park and spa were designed. How might this facility showcase the recreational experience of water, while relating to the scale and character of the existing and evolving resort? A Grand Hall, enclosing a surfing wave pool, restaurant,  and dressing rooms were created as the communal social center of the complex. The 100 x 260-foot pool accommodates 2,000 guests.

This vast space was “humanized” by the delicate scale of open-work wooden trusses spanning and interlaced between concrete column clusters. Within the inter-columniation are smaller-scale spaces furnished with lounge furniture and Jacuzzi tubs.
